WHAT IS PUBLISHER ROCKET?
Publisher Rocket software was formerly known by the name KDP Rocket. Why did that change? I guess the name has kindle copyrights. I can’t help with all the details because today we are here to talk about Publisher Rocket for your business; Not some lame story about the name of the software. I preferred the name as KDP Rocket and mistakenly called that sometimes.
So, back to Publisher Rocket…
This software is a research tool for Amazon. Publisher Rocket is very useful, and you can tell that the creators understand what goes on in Amazon from the loaded features it has. The application, available for both PC and Mac, can be simply installed on your computer.
So what is freaking remarkable about the Publisher Rocket? Its features!
The FOUR UNIQUE FEATURES OF PUBLISHER ROCKET are:
- Keyword Search
- Competition Analyzer
- Category Search
- AMS Keyword Search
90% of the reasons I use Publisher Rocket, is how easy it makes Amazon advertisement for me. That’s essentially with the last feature on the list; AMS Keyword Search. Of course, this doesn’t make the other features useless, as I about to show you here. This is just my personal opinion.
Now, let’s talk about the four features. Kicking off with;
This feature, which is the first on our list, and the application is pretty decent. Once you click on it, you’d see a search bar with another bar on the left, giving you options of E-book or Book (that’s hardcopy now). This is important because when you’re doing your keyword research, you want to see relevant keyword ideas, and sometimes what is relevant for a keyword like ‘yoga’ in E-book might not be relevant for ‘yoga’ in the print book. It’s just an extra precaution.
The ‘keyword search’ feature gives you a whole bunch of keyword ideas. It’s almost like the list never ends. When you type your keyword in the search bar and press enter, a long list comes out. Sticking with our broad keyword example ‘yoga’, there would be results like yoga poses, yoga free kindle books, and so on when you input yoga in the search bar. Yoga is the broad keyword while yoga poses and others would be long-tail keywords.
Yoga, although very competitive, is exceptionally profitable. Because of this competition, it would be difficult for your book to rank on the first page where you could actually make sales. It’s wiser for you as a publisher to go for the longer tail keywords. There would be less competition, but it could also be less profitable. Not minding, it would still be easier to make your money with those keywords.
If I click on the ‘analyze’ bar, I’d also get other things relevant to each keyword on the table. Metrics like:
- Number of Competitors: this is the number of books presently competing for that keyword.
- Estimate Monthly Sales.
- Google Searches/Month.
- Estimate Amazon Searches/Month: it tells you the number of people that have typed in that keyword in Amazon’s small search bar. I kinda look at this.
- Competitive Score: this is usually on a scale of 1(low) -100(high). Scores around 80-100 are for the big dogs. However, I have another criterion to analyze my competition more precisely. Just click here to learn more.
And that’s what we have for ‘Keyword Search.’ My business with this feature, as I said earlier, is mainly to get keyword ideas.
Here you can see the competition analysis of 10 books with the highest ranking of a particular keyword e.g., yoga book. With this information, you can tell if a ‘yoga’ is a too competitive keyword or not.
You get to see the:
- Type of book: E-book or Book.
- Author’s name.
- Age of Book: documented in days.
- Amazon Best Seller Rank(ABSR).
- Keyword in Title(KWT): comes as Yes/No
- Keyword in Subtitle (KWST): also appears as Yes/No.
Note if the keyword is on the title, then it’s well optimized. You’re more likely to get a first-page placement that way and hence, better sales.
With this feature, you can publish your books in categories. Most importantly, you can find out categories that would be profitable for your books. Amazon has over 16,000 book categories, and it can get confusing when you are trying to figure out which is best for your book. Publisher Rocket saves your ass this stress.
Buyers sometimes decide to look for books in Amazon using the category search, and maybe that’s how they’ll find your book. You can never tell.
In the ‘Category Search’ feature, you are provided with data like:
- ABSR #1: average best seller rank for the book ranked 1st place in this category
- ABSR #10: average best seller rank for the book ranked 10th place in this category
- Sales to #1: number of book sales you need per day to rank 1st place in this category.
- Sales to #10: number of book sales you need per day to rank 10th place in this category.
AMS Keyword Search
AMS (Amazon Marketing Services) Keyword Search is the main feature in Publisher Rocket. The Publisher Rocket Team already said all there is to this feature in the one- guideline above the search bar. I quote, “Enter in a general keyword, phrases or book title, and Publisher Rocket will find a large list of AMS keywords for you to use in your campaign.”
When I first started my publishing business, I did my first few campaigns manually, and it’s the most boring piece of shit ever. After about a few hours, I was going nuts because I just couldn’t stand it. I eventually decided to get the Rocket, which saved the day and eased all of that tension.
So when using this feature, you type in your keyword into the search bar. For example, when I type ‘yoga’ and press enter.
Hundreds of keywords that have ‘yoga’ would pop up, and I can export the spreadsheet to my computer. Then I just copy this to my campaign. You can also try to search other related keywords until you have the 1000 keywords that you need. For a book that has ‘yoga’ as its keyword, I could also try ‘spirituality’ and export the result page to add to my campaign.
You could use any of the details you get from the AMS Keyword Search in your campaigns. It’s 100% white hat, so no worries! Personally, I include the names of authors in my campaigns.

NAVIGATING THE ROCKET APPLICATION
As a newbie in the publishing business or if it’s your first time trying out the Rocket, it might be difficult for you to figure it all out at first. I would advise that you take out a few hours just to try to understand the software.
If at any point you get stuck, there is a support tab and tutorial tab somewhere down in the application. You could ask questions and watch videos to guide you.
