Last Updated on June 10, 2023 by Jordan Alexo

Are you looking to supercharge your income and escape the 9-5 grind?

See, blogging can turn your passion into profit, just like successful bloggers Pat Flynn and Michelle Schroeder-Gardner, who make over $100,000 a month.

In this post, you’ll discover the pros and cons of blogging, including the potential for financial freedom, meeting like-minded people, and living a nomad lifestyle.

But everything comes with drawbacks. Let’s talk about the nitty-gritty, too, so you can decide if blogging is right for you.

Key Takeaways

  1. Blogging as a Business: Blogging can be a lucrative business with diverse income streams like affiliate marketing, display ads, sponsored content, etc. However, this involves treating blogging as a business and not a hobby, which demands dedication and hard work.
  2. Financial Independence and Freedom: Blogging can lead to financial independence, allowing one to quit their day job. However, the income can fluctuate and isn’t as consistent as a regular paycheck.
  3. Unlimited Opportunities and Challenges: Blogging opens up various opportunities like collaborations and partnerships. On the flip side, it may require quickly learning new skills and managing focus amidst diverse possibilities.
  4. Flexibility and Hard Work: Blogging offers a flexible lifestyle, allowing one to work from anywhere and on their term. However, consistently creating high-quality content requires discipline, routine, and significant effort.
  5. Personal Growth and Challenges: Blogging promotes personal growth by expanding one’s knowledge, network, and technological skills. However, it demands patience, discipline, and resilience to handle the workloads, criticism, and potential mental fatigue.

Blogging Pros

#1 – Supercharge Your Income

Supercharge Your Income

One of the biggest to blog is that it can make you a shitload of money. However, you need to come into blogging with a different mindset. You must look at a blog as a business rather than a hobby.

See, this mindset change helps you see things from another perspective. It separates the hobby bloggers, who write content for fun whenever they have time or feel like it.

To someone who will commit to blogging and do whatever is needed to make it successful. It’s a different ball game! You no longer write blog posts because you feel like it but because you know that’s part of running a business.

And sometimes, running a business, you have to do things that aren’t fun. Or you don’t feel like doing them.

There’s a distinction between writing one or two posts whenever you want versus writing your one-hundred posts after a few months of blogging, and your head says, “Damn, I don’t feel like doing this anymore.”

Also, you have a huge potential to earn passive income through affiliate marketing, display ads, sponsored content, and other monetization methods.

#2 – Say Goodbye to Your Day Job!

Well, don’t quit your job just yet! But after a year or two of consistent work, you can say goodbye to your 9-5 job.

You have bloggers making some serious money through their blogs. Here are a few examples:

  • Pat Flynn (Smart Passive Income): Pat Flynn is a well-known online entrepreneur who has built his reputation by being transparent about his income. He started the Smart Passive Income blog to share his journey and online earning strategies. His monthly income reports in 2021 showed that he was making over $100,000 per month, primarily from affiliate marketing.
  • Michelle Schroeder-Gardner (Making Sense of Cents): Michelle Schroeder-Gardner started her blog, Making Sense of Cents, to share her journey to pay off student loans. She expanded it to cover more aspects of personal finance and lifestyle. As of 2021, she reported making over $100,000 a month from her blog, most of that income from affiliate marketing.
  • John Lee Dumas (Entrepreneurs on Fire): John Lee Dumas hosts the Entrepreneurs on Fire podcast and maintains an accompanying blog. He’s known for his transparency about his income, and, as of 2021, he reported earning over $200,000 per month. His income comes from sponsorships, course sales, and affiliate marketing.

So, you can build a business that can bring you financial freedom. Also, you are building something for yourself. When you work for another person, you build someone else’s dream.

But when you run a successful blog, you are building your dream. However, your blogging income can fluctuate. It’s not like a job where you have a consistent paycheck.

#3 – Forge a Path to Unlimited Opportunities

Forge a Path to Unlimited Opportunities

It can be extremely exciting because you never know where everything will lead. For instance, I never thought I’d write content for reputable companies when I started blogging.

Furthermore, receive requests from companies asking to review their products. And for me, blogging is an entirely new ball game. I can imagine the opportunities that await those who have been blogging for years and developed a successful site.

However, these opportunities often mean that you’ll need to learn new skills quickly and can lead to a scattered focus if not managed effectively.

#4 – Embrace the Global Nomad Lifestyle

You can live abroad anywhere your heart desires! I first noticed this a few years ago with my Kindle publishing business. I traveled to Poland for ten days and barely touched my business, but I still made money.

Now with my blog, I’m building it up to be able to work from anywhere I want. That’s the power of building an online business.

You can live and work from anywhere as long as you have a reliable internet connection and computer.

So, if you’re seeking to experience a nomad life, blogging can make it a reality.

#5 – Work on Your Own Terms

be your own boss

One of the biggest reasons most people start blogging is because they want to be their own boss.

They want to wake up, not to an alarm clock, and decide how to spend their day. Although, in part, this is true, it’s important to note that successful blogging requires discipline and routine.

You should set your schedule. As a blogger, leave your creative work for your peak hours. And your more routine tasks for other times of the day.

But that’s only one part of the equation. The other is you still need to work your ass off to become a successful blogger.

See, producing high-quality content isn’t easy, and we aren’t talking about one or two blog posts. We’re talking about hundreds, if not thousands, of blog posts over time.

Of course, you want to get to a point where you can hire writers or editors to help, but until then, you’ll need to hustle and put in the work.

#6 – The Passive Income Dream

Many people dream about making money while they sleep, and blogging can help make that a reality.

See, once you publish a post, it stays up for years or even decades. Especially if it’s an evergreen article and you continuously update it. If that post promotes affiliate products or includes ads, it can make you money long after you hit “publish.”

However, the truth about passive income is that it takes a lot of upfront work. Your blog won’t rank well on Google and other search engines if you don’t consistently create high-quality content.

So, you must keep pumping new content, updating old ones, and promoting your blog to keep the money flowing in.

#7 – Expand Your Network

meet people

That’s something I love about blogging! You can connect with people worldwide who share your interests and passions. And often with different perspectives about how to live life.

Usually, you won’t find these people in your day-to-day life. Most people have an employee mindset and never consider starting a blog or building an online business.

I’m not calling these people out. That’s just the reality of it. Their mindset is very different from entrepreneurs and bloggers who have a growth mindset.

But by blogging, you’ll inevitably come across like-minded people. Also, you can join communities and forums.

Although I don’t suggest joining any and every group out there – Often public groups can be full of people who are not serious and may provide bad advice.

So if you want to join a group, see if you find a high-quality online course with a private community. For instance, I joined “Blog Growth Engine.” It has been an incredible place to connect with other bloggers who take stuff seriously.

Also, you have mentors and influencers you can follow and learn from.

#8 – Launch a Budget-Friendly Blog

Setting up a brick-and-mortar store, you can easily invest thousands of dollars just to get started. Not only do you need to pay for rent, utilities, and inventory, but also employees and marketing expenses.

Besides, after spending that money, you still have no guarantee that your business will succeed.

However, the beautiful thing about blogging is that it can cost you as little as a cup of coffee per month.

So what do you need?

  • A domain name costs about $10-$15 per year.
  • A web hosting service can cost around $2.

And that’s about it! All the rest can be done for free using a platform like WordPress (needed for creating and managing your blog).

Of course, if you want, you may invest in a better web host, such as WPX Hosting, which provides faster loading times and better support. And you can purchase a professional theme for your blog.

Although, you don’t need these things to start a blog. If you want, you may get them later down the road once your site is making money.

#9 – You Expand Your Knowledge

expand your knowledge

Even if you’re already an expert on a subject, starting a blog will expand your knowledge further.

To write content, you often need to research and learn more about the topic you’re covering, which can lead to discovering new perspectives and ideas.

With time, you become extremely knowledgeable in your niche. You can also share your unique insights with others, which can help them learn and grow.

Blogging Cons

#10 – Cultivate Patience

be patience

Sometimes with blogging, you have the patience of a saint. You seriously do! Imagine after you published fifty posts, you still get ten visitors daily. It happens!

But what I’ve noticed after analyzing the success of many successful bloggers; Is that the speed your blog grows depends largely on your experience level, niche, competition, and a variety of other factors.

See, you have to understand what Google wants and optimize your blog accordingly. One of the crucial ranking factors nowadays is topical authority.

This means you need to build a blog with high-quality, in-depth content that replies to as many questions as possible in your niche.

So, bloggers who plan their content with these factors in mind and consistently put out valuable content over time are likelier to see steady growth.

Often this is something new bloggers don’t realize. And with search engines, usually, it takes you months until you notice you did something wrong.

One of my biggest failures with Jordan Alexo was initially being all over the place with my content strategy. Like I spoke about “Best credit repair apps” and, the next day, “how to buy land in the Metaverse.”

As you can see, these topics have nothing to do with each other. Then Google crawls your site and wonders, “What the heck is this website about?” This can lead to confusion and poor rankings.

For this reason, you should focus on a niche, target low-competition keywords, and remain patient as you grow your blog over time.

#11 – Master Essential Tech Skills

Another potential con is that there’s a learning curve when it comes to blogging.

You don’t realize it until you get involved. For instance:

  • Setting up your blog and learning to use the blogging platform. It isn’t exactly rocket science. But someone who is not tech-savvy can still find it challenging.
  • Learning how to optimize your blog for search engines takes time and effort.
  • Figuring out how to write engaging and easily readable content.

And after all of that, you still have to learn how to use analytics tools, manage email lists, image editing, and more. Besides, now with AI tools, it’s nearly impossible to ignore their importance.

If you don’t use artificial intelligence to help your blogging, your content may fall behind the competition. It’s like your competition pumps out then posts a week while you struggle to get one done.

So, you must learn to use the latest technology to optimize your blog, keep up with the competition, and succeed as a blogger.

I often spend days researching and learning about new tools. Just today, I was researching prompts to generate content in ChatGPT.

Hence, get used to always learning new technologies, skills, and strategies to expand your blog.

#12 – You Got To Write, A Lot!

write a lot

I can’t stress this enough: to be a successful blogger, you must write… a lot. Not only do you have to write a lot, but you have to write consistently.

No matter if it’s raining or snowing outside or if you’re feeling uninspired, you need to deliver high-quality content regularly.

You must do this for months and at the beginning without seeing much traffic or recognition.

So, I’ll give you a minute to let that sink in your mind… 1, 2, 3!

Okay, if you’re still reading, you’re probably ready to take on the challenge. However, that’s the reality of blogging. Only if you have the budget to hire a team of writers immediately can you avoid writing frequently.

But for most people, that’s not an option. Fortunately, we have AI writers like ChatGPT, Writesonic, and other tools to help us create content quickly and easily.

Once again, I suggest trying these tools to help take some of the load off writing.

#13 – Achieve Organizational Excellence

Most people want to be their own business. However, many of them come from an employee background.

When you start blogging, you won’t have anyone saying, “Hey, John, get this article done until the end of the day.”

You won’t have anyone motivating you to get your work done. Nobody is going to fire you for not meeting deadlines or not producing enough content.

And to add up, it’s extremely easy to fall off the wagon. I mean, if you work from home, you have hundreds of distractions like Facebook, video games, YouTube, and more.

In the beginning, these things may not be a huge issue. But after some weeks of not seeing much success with your blog, or for whatever reason, you feel bored, you can easily stumble off your path.

For this reason, you need to be extremely organized with your work. You should set a schedule, create daily to-do lists, and prioritize tasks.

In my case, I have a list of all the posts I want to write each week on a Google Sheet. I also set monthly goals like I want twenty new blog posts this month and eight new YouTube videos published.

This keeps me on track, and I know my daily priorities. Therefore, make sure to organize all your work.

#14 – Mental Fatigue

mental fatigue

Blogging can be mentally draining. It’s a creative and intellectual process that requires constant concentration, research, and analysis.

Also, if you’re new, you probably must learn new skills like SEO, effective content creation, and marketing strategies.

And guess what? We aren’t machines! Some days, you may feel your head is in the clouds, and you can’t come up with any new ideas.

On the other days, you may feel pressured to write more content than your brain can handle.

I suggest taking some time off when you’re feeling mentally exhausted. I know this is easier said than done (at least for me).

But taking breaks and giving your brain a chance to recharge is essential. You can either go for a walk, take a power nap or engage in a different activity altogether.

Or just spend one day binge-watching your favorite Netflix series to take your mind off work.

#15 – Overcome Criticism

No matter how good your blog posts are, someone always has something negative to say. It doesn’t mean your work is terrible; it’s just one person’s opinion.

With my YouTube channel, I had to deal with negative comments frequently. Some of these comments were purely hateful. Once, one guy said he hated my videos and that I should stop making them altogether.

Did I stop? No. I just kept creating content and improving my skills. But the thing is, then ten other people commented on that same video, saying how helpful and informative it was for them.

The same thing happens with blogging or anything else you put out there. You should expect some criticism. Sometimes it may be constructive, and sometimes it may be hurtful.

So, grab any important insights from constructive criticism and learn from them. And the 100% hateful comments? Well, don’t pay attention to them. Often these are trolls or people with nothing better to do with their time.

Last Thoughts

Blogging isn’t just a passion or hobby. But a powerful tool that can transform your life and bring financial freedom.

However, the journey to a successful blog comes with challenges and takes significant effort, time, and patience.

But the rewards outweigh the difficulties as it presents opportunities for passive income, flexible lifestyle, personal growth, and meeting like-minded people all over the world.

You can become an entrepreneur without spending much money upfront and work at your own pace.

At the same time, you should be aware of some drawbacks, such as the steep learning curve, potential criticism, and mental fatigue. Also, you must organize your work and maintain consistency to succeed.

So, if you’re up for the challenge and willing to put in the work, blogging can be highly rewarding.

One final note: Every successful blogger started from scratch. But the fact is they started and kept going. Most people fail because they never start.
